Forever Muse

This Mother's Day we honour motherhood in all forms - those who have lost their mums, those becoming mums, those balancing work and motherhood, stay-at-home mums and those who have struggled with fertility.

A mother's love comes in so many forms - it's not always simple or traditional, but it is unconditional, powerful & pure, a love like no other. While mothers don't consider themselves muses or icons, we certainly do.

Happy Mother's Day Mums - forever our muse.

WHAT QUALITIES OF YOURS CAN YOU SEE IN YOUR CHILD?

Their thoughtfulness and compassion, determination and courage and their love of laughter.

WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD PASS ON TO A NEW MUM?

This is the first time you and your baby have experienced this new world of motherhood, mistakes will happen, plans will change, and you may very well have a bad day or two. So, take a deep breath and each day one at a time. Opinions of other people are just that, and you can do what you like with them - take them or leave them.

HOW HAS BEING A MOTHER CHANGED YOU?

I never knew what true unconditional love was until the day my son was born. He brought a new dimension to my life and changed me to a mother and my relationship with my husband to being a family. My children bring so much joy into my life and I'm so grateful and beyond proud that I'm their mum.

WHAT IS YOUR MOTHER'S DAY TRADITION?

My Mother's Day tradition is both honouring the past and celebrating the present. We start the day with a warm breakfast cooked by Dad. We then visit my mother-in-law's resting place with flowers, keeping her memory alive in our hearts. We end the day with a lunch or dinner with my mum, cherishing memories together.

WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE MOST ABOUT OTHER MUMS?

What I really admire about other mums is their resilience. Through all the tantrums and obstacles they face, they find a way to tackle motherhood with a smile.

WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD PASS ON TO A NEW MUM?

Trust your instincts and do what works best for you and your baby. Every family is unique, create a parenting style that aligns with your values and needs of your family. You've got this mama!

Kyah & Ayva

WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU'VE LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF AS A MOTHER?

I am more emotional than I ever knew. I've always thought of myself as such a tough/strong person, who never runs on emotion, but being a mum has brought out a whole different side of me. I've never felt such happiness or sadness, sometimes both at the same time.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING ON SPENDING MOTHER'S DAY?

I am excited to spend my first Mother's Day with my daughter and my mum who is coming to visit from Adelaide.

WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE MOST ABOUT OTHER MUMS?

I admire the strength mums have and the sacrifices they make every day. I know for myself, I felt so lost in the beginning and I really struggled with how much my life changed. I never realised how many women actually go through this, because when you see them you'd never know. They just keep pushing through, trying to be the best mum for their child.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE THE MOST ABOUT MOTHERHOOD?

The journey of motherhood has connected and strengthened my bond with other mothers in my life, from friends, family, colleagues and my own mother. Despite everyone's unique experience, you're all united in navigating the incredible, demanding and rewarding path together. I also love witnessing the growth and development of my son every day, it never fails to amaze me.

WHAT QUALITIES OF YOURS DO YOU SEE IN YOUR CHILD?

His determination and resilience, which sometimes present as stubbornness! He also has a fierce opinion on his footwear & loves to pick out his own shoes, like his mum.

HOW HAS BEING A MOTHER CHANGED YOU?

It made me more compassionate and empathetic towards others. When you have a little baby trying their hardest to communicate with you as you both navigate your new world together, it truly fosters a greater understanding of other's needs and emotions.

WHAT QUALITIES OF YOURS CAN YOU SEE IN YOUR CHILD?

Taylah's big heart and love of animals. Always treating others the way she would like to be treated.

WHAT'S ONE THING YOU THINK YOU'VE LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF AS A MOTHER?

I think one thing I've learnt about myself as a mother is you never stop worrying about your children... the worry just differs as they grow from babies to adults. I've learnt as a mother that you can't always protect your children from getting hurt (emotionally or physically). Sometimes you have to let them make mistakes in order for them to grow.

HOW HAS BEING A MOTHER CHANGED YOU?

I think when you become a mother it changes your whole mindset. I guess you start becoming less selfish and more selfless if that makes sense. You become responsible for the growth and this little human and you just want to teach and equip them with morals and tools to become great adults.

Taylah

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT YOUR MUM?

Her baking and when she jumps in my bed just to bug me.

WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE MOST ABOUT YOUR MUM?

She's always kind to others and she's the strongest person I know, she has always made us kids feel loved even when she was struggling.

WHAT HAS YOUR MUM TAUGHT YOU ABOUT BEING A WOMAN?

Probably not specifically a woman but my mum has always instilled in us to always be kind and forgiving. Her favourite sayings growing up was... "Be nice to each other" and "If you don't have anything nice to say... don't say it."

WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED AS A MUM?

My 'super' mum told me that "You can only do your best and your best will always be good enough!" I live by that motto and over the years have realised that I can't be everything to everyone.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING ON SPENDING MOTHER'S DAY?

My family religiously celebrates Mother's Day together. This year I'm having lunch at Totti's with my favourite two women in my life - my mum and my sister, plus our families of course.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE LIFE AS A WORKING MUM?

Working full time with 2 children (and 1 on the way) comes with challenges, sacrifices and joy. I can only do what I do with a strong network, being organised (a family calendar is a must!), flexibility at work and surrounding myself with like-minded women who cheer each other on.

Chloe & Oliver

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR MUM?

C & O - Help my mum make dinner and desserts.

WHAT QUALITIES OF YOURS CAN YOU SEE IN YOUR CHILD?

His loving and affectionate, gentle nature. He's a softie like me, very emotional and always talks about his feelings and tells his family he loves them - which I love.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE LIFE AS A WORKING MUM?

I'm lucky to have two very supportive grandmothers who help us out, and my husband and I are a great team who do 50/50 of everything involved in Theo's life & our home life. I am also lucky to have a supportive & flexible workplace and angelic carers at daycare who make being a mum possible! Also managing boundaries and switching off, and being present wherever I am is key to feeling like I'm doing my best job - at work and home.

HOW HAS BEING A MOTHER CHANGED YOU?

I know myself better now - I'm much stronger and more resilient than I ever thought I was. I love being a mum more than I ever thought I would, and I have so much admiration for all mums (including my own) who juggle so many things daily and constantly make sacrifices and put their kids first - women are incredible!
